  5. Anatoly Karpov, now the world's highest rated player as a
  6. result of FIDE's banishment of Garri Kasparov, continued his
  7. winning ways when he claimed victory at the Category 14 Dos
  8. Hermanas, Spain invitational tournament held at the end of
  9. May. Dos Hermanas marked the fourth major win of the year
  10. for the 42 year old former World Champion, who had
  11. previously secured victories at Category 14 Baden-Baden,
  12. Germany; the strong Hoogovens elimination event and at
  13. Dortmund, one of 1993's strongest tournaments.

  15. Karpov's performance at Dos Hermanas was reminiscent of the
  16. days when he would not just win, but he would dominate the
  17. field. Despite competition that was rated near 2600, Karpov
  18. finished with an impressive 7.5 out of 9 points, consisting
  19. of 6 wins, 3 draws and no losses.

  21. A full point behind in second place at 6.5-2.5 was 17 year
  22. old Judit Polgar. Russian GMs Alexander Khalifman and
  23. Vladimir Epishin tied with Spanish GM Manuel Rivas Pastor at
  24. 5-4, while Israeli (formerly Russian) GM Leonid Yudasin, who
  25. won the subsequent tournament held at Leon and the Spaniard,
  26. Jorge Magem, followed with 4-5 scores. English GM Michael
  27. Adams' 3.5-5.5 result was disappointing. Two Spanish IMs,
  28. Izeta and Fernandez, brought up the rear with 2.5 and 2
  29. points, respectively.

  31. Although he's not known as an attacking player, Karpov's
  32. play has become noticeably more aggressive in recent years.
  33. In his game against Yudasin, he seized the opportunity to
  34. sacrifice an exchange to open the position in front of the
  35. Black king.
